HBO Dominates CableAce Awards

HBO continues to reign supreme at the CableAce Awards, securing a remarkable 32 victories from 108 nominations during the 19th annual celebration of excellence in cable television held over the weekend.

This impressive achievement marks a significant increase from their previous year's total of 28 awards, as the Time Warner-owned network surpassed second-place TNT, which received only eight accolades.

Among the standout winners was “The Larry Sanders Show,” which once again dominated the comedy category. For the fifth consecutive year, Garry Shandling’s satirical talk show took home the award for Best Comedy Series, in addition to accolades for Writing and Directing, making it a total of three wins from 15 nominations. HBO has now clinched the Best Comedy Series title six years in a row, dating back to “Dream On” in 1992.

This year, “Oz,” HBO's gritty new prison drama, also made a significant impact, receiving three CableAce Awards. It was recognized as the Best Drama Series and saw its lead actors, Eamonn Walker and Rita Moreno, win for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Dramatic Series respectively.

While the successes of “Larry Sanders” and “Oz” were anticipated, there were some unexpected highlights among the winners. One notable surprise was HBO’s “In the Gloaming,” a dramatic special directed by Christopher Reeve, which emerged as the most awarded single program of the year. It converted four out of its six nominations into wins, including accolades for Best Dramatic/Theatrical Special, Original Score, Writing, and a performance by Glenn Close, who portrayed a mother coping with her son's battle with AIDS, recognized in the “guest actress” category. In a surprising twist at this year's CableAce Awards, HBO faced a significant upset when Kel Mitchell, star of Nickelodeon's "Kenan & Kel," claimed the award for Best Comedy Actor. This win was unexpected, as he surpassed renowned actors like Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn from "The Larry Sanders Show," as well as Robert Wuhl from "Arli$$," which itself garnered two awards.

Similarly, "Arli$$" co-star Sandra Oh achieved a stunning victory as Best Actress in a Comedy, defeating notable contenders including Janeane Garofalo from "The Larry Sanders Show" and Tracey Ullman, who had won the previous year for her HBO series "Tracey Takes On…"

In contrast, the awards for major films and miniseries were more anticipated. TNT's "George Wallace" stood out as the leading longform production, securing three CableAce Awards. This included the title for Outstanding Miniseries and individual accolades for Gary Sinise, who won for his performance, and John Frankenheimer for direction.

HBO's own "Miss Evers' Boys," which excelled at the Primetime Emmys with five wins, added two CableAces to its collection: one for Best Movie and another for Alfre Woodard as Best Actress in a Movie or Miniseries.

Additional HBO productions recognized included "The Chris Rock Show," which won for Best Entertainment Host and Best Variety Special/Series, along with George Carlin’s "40 Years of Comedy," which received awards for Best Standup Special and Writing.

On a different note, the Family Channel celebrated its sole CableAce win, with Kimberly Elise taking home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for her role in "The Ditchdigger’s Daughters." She triumphed over strong competition, including Faye Dunaway and Cicely Tyson.

Finally, veteran actor George C. Scott was acknowledged for his performance, winning the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries for his role in the Showtime remake of "12 Angry Men," directed by William Friedkin. In a surprising turn of events, Comedy Central's unconventional animated series "South Park" has emerged victorious, taking home the prestigious CableAce award for best animated programming. This triumph came at the expense of other strong contenders, including “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist” from the same network, Nickelodeon’s “Kablam!” and Cartoon Network’s “Johnny Bravo.”

The CableAce awards, known for recognizing excellence in cable programming, saw HBO lead the pack with a remarkable 32 wins, followed by TNT with eight. Other notable winners included Showtime with five awards, while Cinemax, CNN, and ESPN each secured four. Nickelodeon also made a mark with three awards, and both Bravo and the Discovery Channel, along with Lifetime and the Travel Channel, each earned two accolades.

On Saturday, Nickelodeon was honored with the Golden CableAce Award for its impactful volunteer campaign, “The Big Help.” Additionally, the Governors Award was presented to John (Dubby) Wynne, the president and CEO of Landmark Communications, acknowledging his significant contributions to the industry.

The National Academy of Cable Programming celebrated the CableAce awards in a series of ceremonies across three days. The festivities kicked off with non-televised events in Washington, D.C. on October 22, followed by a gala at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, culminating in a televised ceremony hosted by Sela Ward and David Hyde Pierce.
